Summer Semester 2024 Legal Internship/ Law Clerk Position

Centurion Ministries (d/b/a Centurion) is currently accepting applications for a summer intern and/or law clerk. More than one vacancy may be filled from this announcement. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2024.

The summer internship and/or clerkship is full time, with an option to extend the internship to the fall semester if desired.

About Centurion:

Centurion was formed in 1983 and became the first and only organization in the United States, at the time, devoted exclusively to freeing the innocent from wrongful imprisonment. Centurion provides free legal representation to all its clients and represents individuals across the United States and Canada. Centurion investigates claims of innocence and wrongful convictions, without any requirement that a particular type of evidence exist in a case. To date, Centurion has freed70 individuals. More information about Centurion’s work can be found on our website centurion.org.

The Role:

Centurion’s legal team is small and collaborative. Each member of the team plays an integral role in securing a client’s freedom. The purpose of the internship is to expose the legal intern/ fellow to each stage of securing an incarcerated client’s freedom. The legal intern/clerk will receive one case to evaluate and recommend whether Centurion should take on the case, requiring them to work closely with Centurion’s case development team. In addition, the role will require the legal intern/clerk to complete research projects for its staff attorneys, assist in the preparation for hearings and depositions, and participate in investigations. Finally, travel to state facilities may be requested in order for the legal intern/ fellow to gain a better understanding of the impact of their work and the clients we serve.

Centurion attorneys also aim to fight the injustices that lead to wrongful convictions. The intern/clerk may also have the opportunity to work on amicus briefs and shadow Centurion attorneys in court.

The ideal candidate:

    • Is rising 2L or 3L. Recent graduates will be considered for a clerkship position.
    • Welcomes the challenge of conducting multi-jurisdictional legal research and possesses strong legal research skills.
    • Is passionate about freeing clients who have been wrongfully convicted, committed to racial justice, and providing representation to people marginalized under the law.
    • Carries a determination to read through voluminous case files and transcripts.
    • Is collaborative and has a willingness to learn from Centurion’s attorneys.
    • Is legally authorized to work in the United States.

This is a hybrid position, requiring an intern and/or clerk to appear in the office no more than once a week. The internship would begin on June 3, 2024. We expect summer intern to make a ten-week commitment.

Compensation:

Centurion will provide a modest stipend.
