On January 17, 1995, 38-year-old Denise Raymond was found bound, gagged, blindfolded, and shot in her Bronx apartment. Two days later, 43-year-old livery driver Baithe Diop was fatally shot on a street nearby after being dispatched from the same building.

Cathy Watkins, a resident of the building, was arrested in connection with Diop’s murder. At trial, the prosecution relied heavily on identification evidence and witness testimony. A dispatch operator claimed to recognize Watkins’s voice on the call that sent Diop to the pickup location, and two park witnesses testified they had overheard discussions about the murder. Watkins was convicted in 1997 of second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years to life, despite the lack of physical evidence linking her to the crime.

Following her conviction, Centurion became involved in investigating Watkins’s case. Their team conducted a thorough review of the trial record, interviewed witnesses, and identified significant gaps and inconsistencies in the evidence presented at trial. Centurion’s reinvestigation played a critical role in uncovering new, credible evidence demonstrating Watkins’s innocence.

In 2012, the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office reopened the case. Investigators found that one of the key trial witnesses had recanted her testimony. Cell phone records revealed that the stolen phone of the murder victim was linked to members of a Bronx gang known as “Sex, Money & Murder,” rather than to Watkins. Based on these findings, the District Attorney’s Office concluded that Watkins did not commit the crime.

Watkins was released on bond in October 2012, and all charges were formally dismissed on December 13, 2012. She had spent approximately 17 years in prison for a crime she did not commit.
